I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

In one sense, the song is the centerpiece of Irish filmmaker Ken Loach’s new film ‘The Angel’s Share’ (2012), which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. Since the film is directed by Loach and written by his regular collaborator Paul Laverty, you’d expect it to be politically conscious. And, it is, though this is perhaps Loach’s most light-hearted film (along with, perhaps, ‘Looking for Eric’ (2009)).

The film tells the story of a young man with a criminal past, Robbie, who is at the end of his tether, to start a new life with his young wife and a newborn son. As a part of his community service, he is introduced to the art of appreciating Whiskey (this is Ireland, of course!), and then plans a daring plot, “a whiskey heist”, if you like, which doesn’t go so well after all. But, this is a comedy, and we have a happy ending.

The song, ‘But I would walk 500 miles’, which also is played during the end credits, underscores Robbie’s emotions, his willingness to walk that extra mile for that last-ditch effort to save his life when every avenues for him seems to have closed. And, it’s a journey worth taking.

"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is a song written and performed by The Proclaimers. It was released on their 1988 Sunshine on Leith album, and subsequently as a single. It has become one of their most popular songs, reaching No. 11 in the UK charts and No. 1 on the Australian ARIA Charts in 1989, and No. 3 in the United States Billboard Hot 100 four years later when the song appeared in the film Benny and Joon. The song has become a live staple at their concerts. The Proclaimers played it at Edinburgh 50,000 – The Final Push, the final concert of Live 8 at Murrayfield Stadium on 6 July 2005, to symbolise the conclusion of "The Long Walk to Justice".

The Song Here.

When I wake up yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you

If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you

When I come home yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm lonely yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man whose lonely without you
When I'm dreaming yes I know I'm gonna dream
Dream about the time when I'm with you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door
