Under The Hawthorn Tree
Almost a throwaway scene from Chinese director Zhang Yimou's 2010 film, 'Under the Hawthorn Tree', and it takes me to my childhood, in a small town in Assam, where we had a number of betel nut trees. We were young and did not know how to break open the green betel nuts (the older people preferred the ripen nuts, to be chewed with pan!), so we would place the green nut on the crack between the door and the beam (the doors were always wooden) and crack open the nuts. Old World!
