Duvidha

The film is deathly slow. The visuals are grainy. The acting is awkward. The dialogue is delivery stilted.

Yet, Mani Kaul’s Duvidha (1973) is so mesmerising that you cannot stop looking. There is Raisa Padamsee’s ethereal beauty, and there is story of a ghost who falls in love with a young bride, taken from Vijaydan Detha’s retelling of an old Rajasthani folk tale.

It is one of those movies that you are grateful that it exists. Amol Palekar’s Paheli is not a patch on it.
