Two of my favourite films and two of my favourite film posters, in glorious black and white, and incidentally, both the films are from Taiwan.

On the left is Wong Kar-wai’s Happy Together, a hypotonic tale of a doomed love affair between two men from Taiwan in desolate Argentina. This is the film that makes me sad every time I watch it, and it is very generous sadness.

On the right is Johnnie To’s Vengeance, starring French pop legend Johnny Hallyday, as a hitman turned cook, out to avenge the death of her daughter and her family in Taiwan, with the help of three other hitmen. It’s all genre staff, but how wonderfully To presents them on screen. Wonder to behold.
