A house in Varanasi. Or rather, a door in Varanasi. There are so many of such doors in the old city, Kashi, the oldest living city in the world —

Ah, the doors, and the doorways, so inviting, you just want to walk up and knock on them. Since in Varanasi the houses are clustered (it seems, in the early days, everyone wanted to settle down on the banks of the river), and you cannot see the entire house, the unique way to attract attention is to have decorative, eye-popping doors and doorways, and walls, in bright colours and in pictures. In Varanasi, you cannot shy away from colours. They are everywhere. The swordsmen on the wall represent sentries (watchmen) guarding the house from intruders —
